We’ve received some really good skin-related questions from our patients and friends, and thought we’d like to share Dr. Quenby Erickson’s comments and thoughts in response.

Here’s a great summer-related question from one of our fantastic clients:

Q: “What sunscreen products are safe to use on a baby?”

A: “Gentle products with Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide (physical sunscreen elements which reflect and scatter UVA/UVB). Products that contain these ingredients include SkinMedica Daily Physical Defense, Neutrogena PureScreen, and Obagi Nu-Derm Physical UV Block (which contains a whopping 18.5% zinc oxide!)”.

Dr Erickson cautions parents though, adding that “Direct and prolonged sun exposure is always to be avoided, and in infants especially. Their skin is much more delicate. Some people may have the misguided thought that if the baby has sun block on, that being out in direct sun is “OK”. It’s very important to understand that these sunscreen products are only a recommendation to add to the rest of the safe sun practices: seek shade, cover anything you can with UPF clothing, and avoid the mid day hours when the sun is hottest.” (This means you too, adults!)

So, no matter what your age, play it safe out there this summer!
