KYBELLA™

Looking to improve the appearance of the dreaded “double chin”? Now there is a treatment that is specifically designed to contour and improve the appearance of submental fullness. This is the first and only FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment that is derived from deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that actually helps breakdown and absorb dietary fat. It essentially destroys the fat cells beneath the chin upon injection.

Who is it good for?

Patients asking about their submental fullness may, at times, refer to it as their “double chin.”
It is a common, yet undertreated facial aesthetic condition that can:

  • Detract from an otherwise balanced and harmonious facial appearance
  • Lead to an older and heavier look
  • Impact a broad range of adults, including both women and men
  • Be caused by aging, genetics and/or weight gain

According to a survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), 68% of consumers are bothered by submental fullness—nearly as many as those bothered by lines and wrinkles around the eyes (71%)!

What should I expect?

Treatment with KYBELLA™ is customized by the physician to the patient’s aesthetic goals for an improved chin profile. Once you have discussed your needs with Dr. Erickson, your treatment can take place in less than fifteen minutes. In clinical studies, many patients experienced visible results in two to four treatment sessions spaced at least one month apart. It may take up to 6 treatments to achieve your goals for improvement. Once the aesthetic response is achieved with KYBELLA™, retreatment is not expected.

Are there risks?

Though less common, there is a chance of minor bruising associated with any injectable. To lessen your chances of bruising, we recommend discontinuing use of products like Aspirin, Blood-Thinners, Fish-Oils, Alcohol, Aleve, and any aspirin-based products like Alka Seltzer for 2 weeks prior to your procedure. We do not treat patients who are pregnant or nursing. Here is more specific information on risks, click to view. Please call our office for a consultation to discuss if you are a good candidate for this treatment, we are always happy to consult you and answer any questions you may have.

We all know it -and fear it- the presence of fat on the upper neck or under the chin, commonly known as (the dreaded) double-chin. Pockets of fat can be genetic, and can form despite weight or healthy eating. This contributes to an older and heavier overall look, and nobody wants that!

Recently FDA-approved Kybella is a new way to treat it. Made up of a naturally-occurring molecule, the treatment consists of a series of small injections to destroy the fat cells and tighten the neck.
